Helping you choose your course in life...

Coaching for personal development is not the same as hiring a football coach or the unfulfilled mother of a Wimbledon hopeful. It is not about being told how and when to do what with whom. Rather than make decisions for you, a coach will ask you the right questions to help you find your own solutions. Learning to make choices and commit to taking control of your destiny is central to a flourishing self-confidence and self-esteem.

Coaching can help you take responsibility for your own life and stop unhealthy levels of dependence on others to provide direction and reassurance. Personal disempowerment, helplessness and devolved responsibility result from what psychologists call an external, as opposed to an internal, locus of control. Of course no human is an island and one´s life is partially shaped by the people in them and their environment but without an internal compass, one´s life is often left to the mercy of the people and things around them.

Think of the following analogy:

If your life were a ship and you its Captain then you would not rely solely on the whims of the weather or the temperament of the sea to set your destiny. If you inherited this ship from your parents, like your genetic code, then it is what it is but you are still responsible for its upkeep, and improvements. You can change the sails and the crew and use your own charts, take control of the compass and the wheel. You have to enjoy being at sea as well as upon the shores of your chosen destinations. After all, the elements, occasional pirate or tempting Siren will take you to unexpected places in your journey. Life is full of unchartered waters, and sometimes these unknowns lead to fear and a temptation to set anchor, but this is what makes an experienced Captain. A coach can be like a first mate (or parrot on secondment), listening to you, asking questions and reflecting your ideas to help you see what you need to successfully set sail again.
